Microsoft Windows by default does not have an option to either hide a folder/file or make it invisible. Windows provides its users with an option to hide folders or make them invisible via Folder Options but that is not very secure and files can be seen by using the Show hidden files option in Folder Options.

However, here is a wonderful trick by which you can hide your folders or make your folders invisible. This can be achieved without the installation of any new software!

Hide or Make a Folder Invisible in Windows

1. Create a New Folder .

2. Right click on the New Folder and choose ‘Properties‘ -> ‘Customize‘ -> ‘Change icon‘ and select a new icon as blank space.

3. Next, rename the folder and press the ‘Alt’ key along with ‘0160′ numbers simultaneously. Use the Numpad, it is easier!

4. You will now notice that the folder name has disappeared. Since we used a blank space for the folder image, we’ve successfully managed to hide the folder or made it invisible for the naked eye!

Go ahead, create your own folder and fill it up with files that you want to keep away from prying eyes!

gMote is a free tool which makes it very easy to use mouse gestures on your computer. gMote has a dual-pane configuration interface which makes it very easy to create and program mouse gestures. This dual-pane interface also ensures and goes that little bit extra to teach new users how gMote works when one runs it for the first time and the user can run through the built-in tutorial.

Like I mentioned earlier, using gMote is very easy. Click on the create button, create your mouse gesture in the test window and then with the help of a pull-down menu, assign one of the actions available. To ensure that normal mouse movements don’t invoke gesture actions, the user can hold either a key combination, center mouse button or the right mouse button as you make the gesture. The gesture draws a temporary line on the screen as shown above to help users make the correct movement. The app then displays the gesture in a pop-up box before the action. Gestures can be saved and can be easily deleted when they are no longer required. gMote also has a very interesting feature which warns users when newly created gestures are very similar to the already existing ones.

gMote is a Windows only tool. It requires no installation, and you can easily carry it on your pen drive!

Most applications automatically add themselves to the Windows XP Startup when you install them on your PC. Over a period of time, a lot of programs startup while Windows XP boots which results in slowing down your PC. You can avoid this by removing those applications that you don’t use often or do not use when Windows boots.

- Click on Run on the Start Menu, key in ‘msconfig‘ and press enter.

- The Windows XP System Configuration Utility windows will open.

- Click on the Startup tab to display the programs that run at startup.

- Uncheck the items in the Windows XP System Configuration Utility that you want to remove.

- Click the Apply and Ok button.

- Restart your system

This will result in your Windows XP computer booting much faster than before!

I was stuck with a very unusual problem(at least for me!) last week. When I tried to open(by double clicking) my D drive on my notebook, it refused to open automatically, and instead, the OPEN WITH pop up box came on my screen asking me what program I wanted to use to open the file. This put me in a fix and after quite a bit of searching, thankfully I found the solution to it.

Since what I found was slightly complex, here’s a simplified and easy to follow version to solve this problem on all your Windows based computers/laptops.

1. Run Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del or right click on Taskbar)
2. Stop wscript.exe process if available by highlighting the process name and clicking End Process.
3. Then terminate explorer.exe process.
4. In Task Manager, click on File -> New Task->Run.
5. Type “cmd” (without quotes) into the Open text box and click OK.
6. Type the following command one by one followed by hitting Enter key:

• del c:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
• del d:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
• del e:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a

Here, c, d, e each represents drive letters on Windows system. If there are more drives or partitions available, continue by altering the other drive letters. Note that you must also clean the autorun files from USB flash drive or portable hard disk as the external drive may also be infected.

7. In Task Manager, click on File -> New Task
8. Type “regedit” (without quotes) into the Open text box and click OK.
9. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
10. Check if the value name and value data for the key is correct (the value data of userint.exe include the path which may be different than C drive, which is also valid, note also the comma which is also needed): “Userinit”=”C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,” If the value is incorrect, modify it to the valid value data.

Guess this will be of help to a lot of people who are suffering from the same problem!

Having run out of hard drive space on my laptop, I was on the lookout for a tool which would help me manage the space on my hard drive better and I must say that I’m pleased with my latest find - WinDirStat.

WinDirStat is a free tool that comes packed with features to help you manage your hard drive space. It lists the size & percentage of disk space used for all folders & sub-folders on your computer and also gives you a graphical representation of your files, sorted by the type of file extension. One can scan specific folders, multiple local drives and even network drives without any restrictions.

• The directory list, which resembles the tree view of the Windows Explorer but is sorted by file/subtree size,
• The treemap, which shows the whole contents of the directory tree straight away,
• The extension list, which serves as a legend and shows statistics about the file types.

That’s what the signboard says outside A&D Computer Store in Milford, N.H. This goes on to show that there are not many takers for Vista and that the general public still holds on to Windows XP, which has been proven stable.

A red alert situation for Microsoft, its time Bill Gates takes corrective and remedial measures!

One of my cousins was playing around with my laptop last night and somehow removed the filenames/foldernames in Thumbnail view (I use Windows XP Home). I have been breaking my head since then to find out how this is possible. Google surprisingly hasn’t given me an answer yet. The filenames/foldernames aren’t appearing in that particular folder but appear in all other folders. When I switch over to the list view or detail view, I can see the filenames or foldernames. Can someone help me out please? You can notice in the screenshot that the space between two folders has also reduced. I have tried realigning etc but made no progress. Microsoft Support did not help me either.

Help me please!!

Update: The problem was solved, thanks to Vasisht. Quoting his comment here.

Choose another view, say detailed view. Now, when choosing thumbnail view again, press shift and then press thumbnail view. You will get your names back!
