One of our earlier posts, How To Delete A Hotmail Or Windows Live Account brought in a lot of readers and gave us the impression that a lot of people are finding it difficult in closing email accounts. Here next in the series we give you directions to close a Yahoo! account.

Before you decide to close your Yahoo! account, read the below para carefully.

By deleting your Yahoo! account, you will lose access to all personalized areas of Yahoo! such as your GeoCities web page, Mail account, Groups, Auctions, Fantasy Sports, Games, Profiles, Address Book, Briefcase, Portfolio, Personals, and any other areas of Yahoo! that can only be accessed with your Yahoo! ID and password.

Also note that people will still be able to send messages to your closed Yahoo! Mail account for 90 days without getting a delivery error while you will not be able to log in to your account to see them. What you can do however is to set a Vacation Response so that you can direct people to your new mail id. To set this up, follow these steps:

  1. Log into Yahoo! Mail and click the “Mail Options” link in the upper-right corner of the page.
  2. Click on “Vacation Response.”
  3. Fill in the required information and click on the “Turn Auto-Response On” button.

Now that this is done, follow these steps to Delete Your Yahoo! or Yahoo! Mail Account:

  1. Visit the Terminating Your Yahoo! Account page.
  2. Type your password.
  3. Click Terminate this Account.

Quoting Alex’s example here,

Make sure you modify all your online accounts that reference that email address. You don’t want important account emails to go to that address should someone else down the line reopen that address.

For example, John Smith opens jsmith at yahoo dot com. Then he uses that address to open an online bank account. He then closes that email address. Now Jack Smith reopens the jsmith Yahoo account. Now here’s getting John’s residual messages.
