If you’ve lost your iPhone or iPod, you’ll need the serial number to go report it to the police. There is a good chance that we’ve written down the serial number somewhere and forgotten where that piece of paper is or even worse, we’ve never written it down at all!

If that’s the case, then don’t panic. If your lost iPhone or iPod was recently connected to iTunes, then here is a quick way to find out the serial number of your iPod or iPhone.

Open iTunes and go to Help on the iTunes toolbar. Click on Run Diagnostics

Select the iPhone/iPod connectivity tests checkbox and unselect the rest.

Run the iPhone/iPod Connectivity Tests

When you run the iPhone/iPod Connectivity Tests, it will give you an error message like the one below. Ignore that and click on Next.

On clicking Next, it will show you a screen which has the Serial Numbers of the last connected iPod and iPhone

My iPod was not recently connected to iTunes. What do I do?

If your lost iPod was not recently connected to iTunes, then the above method to find out the serial number of the lost iPhone would be of no help. Here’s the alternative.

For Windows users

To find the serial numbers of all the iPods that you have connected to your Windows PC, go to

C:\Documents and Settings\<windowsuser>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPodDevices.xml

Here, “C:” is the default drive and will be the same in almost all cases and <windowsuser> is the computer name

For Mac users

To find the serial numbers of all the iPods that you have connected on your Mac, go to

<Hard Drive>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPod.plist

Open this file with a Property List Editor and you’ll see the serial numbers of all the iPod’s that you have connected to your Mac.

Belkin Rockstar is a new way for music lovers to mix and share music with their friends. The RockStar is a unique six-port hub that connects a combination of MP3 players or ipods and headphones.
