While discussing Google Adsense and revenues generated via Adsense on blogs with a few friends, I was surprised to find out that not many people are aware of Section Targeting and how Section Targeting can help you display ads relevant to your blog/website content. I’m sure most of us who use Google Adsense on our blogs/websites would have realised by now that irrelevant ads can reduce our earnings drastically since visitors of our blog or website will not necessarily be interested in ads that are not closely connected to the topic that they were looking for in the first place.

What is Section Targeting?
Section Targeting is a very simple technique which helps the user to suggest sections of text to Google based on which ads will be displayed. This is a provision made by Google and not a ‘hack’ or a ‘trick’.
Quoting Adsense Help Center
Section targeting allows you to suggest sections of your text and HTML content that you’d like us to emphasize or downplay when matching ads to your site’s content. By providing us with your suggestions, you can assist us in improving your ad targeting. We recommend that only those familiar with HTML attempt to implement section targeting.
How does one implement Section Targeting?
Implementing Section Targeting is very easy. Place the following tags before and after the content that you want to target for the ads.
<!– google_ad_section_start –>
content to be targeted or emphasized upon
<!– google_ad_section_end –>
I don’t want some content to be targeted. Now what?
Don’t you worry! It is also possible to de-emphasize certain portions of the content on your blog or website. Place the following tags before and after the content that you DON’T want to be targeted as far as Google Adsense is concerned.
<!– google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) –>
content to be de-emphasized upon
<!– google_ad_section_end –>
The above sections can be used as many times as you want inside your page. The same can also be included in your header to emphasize on your meta keywords. Also note that it is likely to take around 2 weeks for section targeting to take effect.
