If you’ve used Windows Vista before, you might be aware of the built-in partitioning feature in the Windows Vista Disk Management utility. Windows 7 is no different. Windows 7 also has the option to resize, add or delete partitions and is called shrink or extend partitions in the in-built Disk Management utility. This means you don’t need third party applications as before to do this.
To add/remove/modify your partitions, go to the Start Menu and open Control Panel. On the top right, you will find the very efficient Windows search bar. Type ‘partitions’ and click on ‘Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions‘ under ‘Administrative Tools’ as you can see in the screenshot below.

You’ll see the Disk Management Utility of Windows 7 as shown below.

Shrinking a volume with Windows 7 Disk Management Utility: Right click on the desired volume and select ‘Shrink Volume‘. The Shrink Volume window will now open. Here, you have to specify the amount of space you want to shrink in the chosen volume.
Extending a volume with Windows 7 Disk Management Utility: Right click on the drive that you want to extend and select ‘Extend Volume‘. In the next step you need to specify the amount of space by which you want to extend the volume.
