Monday, July 14th, 2008 | Internet, Social media, Tips with No Comments »

Hi!, If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

StumbleUpon has taken advantage of a popular feature of Firefox 3 browser - the ‘Awesome Bar’ by integrating the StumbleUpon toolbar with Firefox Bookmarks. StumbleUpon Add-On Version 3.23 lets you download all the sites you’ve rated with a thumbs up/’I like it!’ into your bookmarks, giving you as-you-type access to that last cool link you browsed through.

Here’s a step by step method to integrate StumbleUpon ‘Likes’ with Firefox Bookmarks:

  1. Check if
    • You are using Firefox 3, if not, you can download it from here.
    • You are using StumbleUpon Toolbar version 3.23 or above or download the latest version from here.
  2. In Firefox 3, Click on Tools -> Addons.
  3. Select ‘StumbleUpon‘ and click on ‘Options‘.
  4. Click on the Search & Tagging tab, and remember to select/check the Save favorites to a Firefox bookmark folder box. Then start downloading your StumbleUpon Favorites by clicking the ‘Download Favorites’ button.
  5. Once your StumbleUpon Favorites have been downloaded, you’ll get the following popup saying ‘Download complete‘.
  6. Access your ‘StumbleUpon Favorites‘ through your ‘Firefox Bookmarks‘ by clicking on Bookmarks -> StumbleUpon.
  7. You can click on the above image for a full sized one.

You can add me on StumbleUpon by clicking here. Happy Stumbling! :)

KML File Format Now Open Standard

Friday, April 18th, 2008 | Internet, Technology, Web 2.0 with No Comments »

The Keyhole Markup Language (KML) was developed for Google Earth as a way to overlay user-generated content on maps. A KML file uses XML to record details like the place name and its coordinates on the latitude and longitude. Other data can be included in the file to make the view more specific, such as tilt, heading and altitude. Since its release in 2006, the KML file format has been increasingly adopted by more and more application developers. From its use in Flickr, Microsoft Virtual Earth to GPS applications on the phone, the KML file format has received industry wide acceptance. It is due to this accomplishment that the latest version of this file format has received accreditation from the Open Geospatial Consortium, an international voluntary consensus standards organisation, by making it a open standard for all ‘geobrowsers’ like Google Earth, etc.

KML files show as yellow pin-heads in Google Earth.

You can use KML files to send addresses or show a location to someone. To make one, you need to know the latitude and longitude of the place, and visit the online Google Earth KML Creator. Once made, the files can be viewed on any online mapping service that supports the KML file format. Here is a KML file displayed in Google Maps, showing all the national parks of India. Adding these KML tags to your Flickr albums will allow you and others to find your photos for any search conducted on their location name.

Do you have alternative uses for KML files? Let us know in the comments below!

Have You Updated Your Privacy Policy?

Friday, March 28th, 2008 | Google, Internet with No Comments »

Google Adsense updated its policy a couple of weeks back and the update to the policy now requires every Adsense publisher to update his/her individual privacy policies.

Jennifer who blogs at Jensense put up a detailed explanation of the changes in the policy and now provides us with a standard template that one can use. Ajay has a slightly more elaborate version and I’ve created the Privacy Policy for Tech Spikes Privacy Policybased on that.

It has been made compulsory by Google that each and every blog which earns revenue via Google Adsense publish its privacy policy and notify readers each time a change is made. If you are feeling lazy but want to put up a Privacy Policy for your blog, you may choose one of the following three options.

  1. Use my Privacy Policy as a template and suitably modify it for your blog.
  2. Use the template made available at Jensense.
  3. Use the Privacy Policy Plugin.

For those who have a blog but do not use Google Adsense but still want a Privacy Policy, you might want to check out either the Disclosure Policy Generator or DMA’s Privacy Policy Generator.

Unlock Your Locked GTalk Account

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008 | Google, Internet, Tips with No Comments »

Google sometimes locks your GTalk account either by mistake or for whatever reason that they deem fit :P . The same happened to me last night and it took me quite a while to realise that my account was locked. Here is how I unlocked it.

If you see Account locked after trying to log in, follow these steps:

  1. Using the same computer on which your Google Talk logins are failing, click here.
  2. Enter your Google Account username and password, and the letters in the distorted picture.
  3. Once you have successfully logged in, restart Google Talk and try to sign in again.

That’s it. Your GTalk Account is unlocked!
