Windows 7 might be a better looking OS, and it does have some new features, but some old-timers would prefer the classic start menu any day. It’s faster, cleaner, and more keyboard-friendly.
Also missing in Windows 7 is the toolbar in Windows Explorer.
“Classic Shell” is a free Windows utility that replaces the original start menu with the classic start menu – along with some other small fixes.

Features
The classic start menu has a number of features:
- Drag and drop to let you organize your applications
- Options to show Favorites, expand Control Panel, etc
- Shows recently used documents. The number of documents to display is customizable
- Translated in 35 languages, including Right-to-left support for Arabic and Hebrew
- Does not disable the original start menu in Windows. You can access it by Shift+Click on the start button
- Right-click on an item in the menu to delete, rename, sort, or perform other tasks
- Available for 32 and 64-bit operating systems
Quite apart from that, Classic Shell
- Adds the toolbar back to Windows Explorer
- Adds free disk space and file size info back to the status bar
- Makes Alt-Enter bring up folder properties in the Explorer sidebar like it did in XP
- Brings back the older (and nicer) file copy dialog
You can download the program or take a look at the website.
If you think Windows Explorer is too featureless for you, you might want to try Xplorer2.
