A few months ago, Riverturn’s Voice Central application was rudely pulled from the iPhone’s Appstore, with no reasons given and after it had been there for four months.

Well, such occurrences are not uncommon these days. The Appstore rules (what rules?) are flimsy at best, and apps are being pulled and rejected left right and center, no reasons given, and vagueness all around.

Well, guess what, Riverturn got fed up, and they’ve decided to change the rules.

Voice Central Black Swan Edition – a Weblication that is not tied to the AppStore

The new Voice Central Weblication looks just like an iPhone app, feels like an iPhone app, but is not an iPhone app.
Instead, it’s a rich application that runs on the web.

Following are the features as listed on the site:

  • Native iPhone look and feel
  • Sync your Google Voice data
  • Automatic and immediate updates
  • Offline access to Google Voice data
  • Listen to Google Voice messages and read transcriptions.
  • Swipe to delete calls, voicemails, or SMS conversations.
  • Google Contacts import.
  • Call using Google Voice or iPhone.

That’s quite a lot, for an app that runs off the web!

However, being a web app, it has it’s disadvantages – you cannot use the iPhone’s ear-piece to listen to calls. Instead, you’ll have to use headphones or the built-in speaker.

However, you can use the Voice Central weblication to call your contacts using the iPhone:

Also, this weblication cannot access your iPhone’s contacts – you’ll have to add them separately to Google Voice.

Requirements and usage

This weblication requires you to have an iPhone (obviously!) running firmware version 3.0 or greater.
It also requires you to have a Google Voice account, without which it won’t function.

The Voice Central Black Swan edition is currently in a “very limited” beta, and you’ll have to register as a beta tester to try it out.

While the limited beta is free, it’s not likely that the final version will be. The actual price has not yet been made certain, and the weblication might even be ad-supported.

But what is certain is that Riverturn has certainly changed the way the game is played by removing iPhone apps from the iPhone and placing them in the cloud!
