The biggest URL shortening service around – Bit.ly – has begun to do something useful with the data it collects from it’s URL shortening business.

Since bit.ly is used to shorten huge numbers of links every day, they have a pretty good idea of what people are visiting.
The newly launched service, bitly.tv displays the most popular videos that have passed through it’s service, and displays them on it’s front page.

How it works

When you shorten a video link, bit.ly knows about it. And if thousands more shorten the same video link, then it’s popular, right?

Thus, bit.ly uses the data it’s collecting in a useful way, to provide an aggregation of the most popular videos around.
The site also sports a flash interface that lets you view the videos in an overlay on the site itself.

It’s clear that bit.ly is doing this only to emphasize it’s dominance in the URL shortening market, what with rivals like Google and Facebook entering the market! Bit.ly wants to make sure it’s far ahead of them before they even make their shorteners standalone!
