You use the internet every single day. You read blogs, you send emails, you communicate on Facebook, and every time you search through the vast multitudes of information on the web with a search engine, you can’t help but experience a feeling of awe. So many people, so many website, so many articles, so many blogs, so much information…
But how much does this all weigh?
Yes, you read right. Weigh.
CNET weighs the internet
Using publicly available information, for the first time in the world, we have precisely and scientifically calculated the weight of the Internet. Obviously this information is only really useful to someone attempting to work out the cost of posting the Internet somewhere, perhaps to North Korea. Still, the casual reader — hi there! — may still enjoy learning just how damn heavy the thing is.
Well, after their “scientific calculations”, they arrived at at interesting value:

This includes
- 22,837,511,120 kilograms worth of computers
- 1,754,809,310 kilos of servers
- 87,000,000 kg of cables
- 6,075,000 kg of iPhones
- 6,800,000 kg of Blackberries
- 287,524 viruses they don’t weigh anything, but they’re included anyway)
- and 0.01kg of websites (or rather, the electrons that make up the websites)
So there you have it.
498, 438, 559, 990 kilograms of internet is what you’re connected to everyday!
