Mozilla has a new(ish) project called Jetpack, that allows anyone with HTML, Javascript and CSS knowledge to create addons for Firefox. Like any Greasemonkey script, these addons will not require a restart of Firefox and will take effect as soon as you install them.

They have also opened a Jetpack gallery, where developers get to show their products to the user community and receive feedback, and users get to try out these new addons.

Installing a jetpack is as simple as clicking the “Install Jetpack” button.

You’ll see an Installing… screen, and after a couple of seconds, your jetpack is installed!

Some cool Jetpacks:

  1. Image editor

This Jetpack incorporates an item in the right-click context menu for images, that says “edit this image”, letting you edit the image on the fly without any fancy image editing programs.
When you click edit this image, it loads the image in Pixlr, and allows you to edit it right away.

  2. Wikify

    Install Wikify from here.
Wikify puts a small wikipedia icon in the corner of the statusbar. When you select some text and click the Wikipedia button, it pops open a little box with the article relating to the selected text displayed. You can scroll up and down in the box, and click the little X button in the corner to close it.

  3. Thumbtabs

This jetpack takes thumbnails of your tabs and puts them in a sidebar of it’s own.
Much lighter and faster than the usual sidebar addons:
