1.svchost
Threat (0 is low, 10 is high): 3
Effects: Loads DLLs as executable processes and loads services from the registry.
Status: ’svchost.exe’ is not critical.
Path: c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe
The service host process (svchost.exe) navigates the services-to-be-started section of the Windows registry for services to launch, then constructs lists of processes to launch. Svchost is considered a ‘generic’ structure for processes that run as dynamic link libraries (DLLs) however, act as executables. This process isn’t critical, however in some cases, the particular instance can be running a critical process.
2.csrss
Threat (0 is low, 10 is high): 2
Effects: Handles the entire user-mode subsystem.
Status: ‘csrss.exe’ is critical.
Path: c:\windows\system32\csrss.exe
Client/Server Runtime Server Subsystem or csrss.exe is a critical part of the Windows operating system. CSRSS.exe is the user-mode part of the Windows Kernel (win32.sys is the kernel-mode subsystem), CSRSS handles console windows, threads, and the virtual MS-DOS subsystem. This process cannot be ended.
3.lsass
Threat (0 is low, 10 is high): 2
Effects: Allows users to logon, launches shell and controls user access tokens.
Status: ‘lsass.exe’ is critical.
Path: c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe
Lsass.exe is the local security and authentication server system. It handles authentication of users from the Windows logon screen (the “Winlogon process”) and generates user access tokens and launches explorer.exe (or any other defined shell). This process cannot be ended as it is a crucial system service.
