I have earlier used a number of online softwares that attended to all my basic needs for media file conversions. Sadly, all these softwares were either trial versions or they charged around 30$ to unlock the monstrous list of conversion options the software had to offer. Gutted at this, I was out in search for a free software that would attend to all of my media conversion needs.

After quite a search, I came across Format Factory. My initial predictions about this were that this too would consist of a gigantic list of file conversions but would definitely ask me to pay up for it if I were to use all of them. But after installing Format Factory I realised that I had finally discovered a free software that had a huge conversion list and all of them would work for free!

Features of Format Factory:

  2. The left pane of Format Factory contains a large list of collapsible links to the numerous formats you can convert to.
  3. It has a large collection of Video, Audio, Picture and DVD/ISO formats that you can use to convert your media files. Here they are:
    • Video files to MP4/3GP/MPG/AVI/WMV/FLV/SWF.
    • Music files to MP3/WMA/AMR/OGG/AAC/WAV.
    • Pictures to JPG/BMP/PNG/TIF/ICO/GIF/TGA.
    • Rip DVD to video file. Rip Music CD to audio file.
    • MP4 files support iPod/iPhone/PSP/BlackBerry format.
    • Source files support RMVB.

  4. On top of this you can repair broken audio and video files – feature that helps you play media that were earlier unplayable and caused problems.
  5. It can also transfer media files to your phone and the best part about this is that it displays various brands and models of phones that you can choose from(if it appears in the list, if not give the closest model that represents your phone).
  6. Format Factory has a great feature that allows you cut videos and audios to the length you want them to. Just select your media and select the format you want to convert your media to. Now in the screen that pops up, click on Set Range.
  7. Now in the window that opens select the Start time and End time that you want to cut your media. and give OK. Then go to Task>Start Converting. Your edited media file will now get saved in the same folder as your original media was present.

How do I convert my media files using Format factory?

Format Factory is pretty user-friendly and simple to use. Here’s how you go about converting your files:

  1. Download Format Factory and install it on your computer.
  2. Open the program and then click on the file conversion on the navigation pane that you want to convert your media file to.

For example, I wanted to convert my .wma audio file to .mp3 format. This is how I did it.

  • Click on audio in the left navigation pane and select All to MP3.
  • In the window that pops up, click on Add File and give the file that you want to convert and click OK . Click on Set Range if you want to set the length of the song and edit it.

  • No go to Task>Start Converting.
  • Wait for some time for the file to get converted. After conversion the converted file will get saved in the default FF Output Folder in My Documents.

  • The conversion is now complete! The converted file can be accessed from the default folder.

Format Factory is a must have software for anyone who wants to convert media files into various different formats available in its huge list of format conversions.
