Want to prevent Firefox from eating your computer’s memory away? Firefox tends to hog your computer’s memory over long periods of time. You can prevent Firefox from hogging your memory by using an about:config tweak. In reality, the about:config allows Windows to free up some memory that Firefox is using due to all the tabs that you have open. Under normal circumstances, Firefox does not allow Windows to free up memory on minimization.

How do I use this about:config tweak to prevent Firefox from hogging my memory?

  • Type about:config in your Firefox address bar.
  • This will lead to to a page which warns you telling that changing advanced settings will affect the performance, stability, security of your Firefox application, Just click “I’ll be careful , i promise”.
  • Right click on your mouse in the following window and select New -> Boolean

  • Enter config.trim_on_minimize in the pop up box that you can see and click OK. Please follow the screenshots to follow better.

  • After that choose ‘true’ in the next dialog box.
  • Close the about:config window and restart Firefox

Please note that this tweak may lead to slower functionality of Firefox or even bugginess. It is recommended that for those who are happy with Firefox with its standard settings should just leave it alone.
