For all those who do not wish to install any version of Linux OS on their hard drive, here’s an alternative. You can install any Linux Operating System on a Pen Drive or USB Stick if you follow the instructions below. This will also be helpful for those who’d like a Linux OS on their pen drive for use on the go.
1. Find a Pen Drive or USB Stick and Format it!
- Find a pen drive or USB stick which can store 2GB or more. Most Linux OS fit comfortably inside a 1GB pen drive.
- Format the drive using a FAT 32 file system. There is also a small possibility that you might have to format it using a FAT 16 file system.

2. Install UNetBootin:
This is very easy and there’s nothing much to explain here. Windows users use this binary. For Linux users use this binary.

Once UNetBootin is installed, the next step is to install the Linux OS on to your pen drive.
3. Install the Linux OS on to your pen drive

- Open UNetBootin.
- Select the Linux OS you want from the list of distributions listed there for download or point it to the ISO if you’ve already downloaded one.
- Select your pen drive or USB stick (It’s the last on the screen).
- That’s it. You are almost done. Click OK to load the Linux OS on to your Pen Drive.
4. Boot the Linux OS from your Pen Drive
This is the final step. Reboot your system and ensure that you select your pen drive or USB Stick as the drive to boot from!
This is useful for those who would like to try out a Linux Operating System for the first time and do not wish to take a risk by installing it on their hard drive.
