Whenever a new product from a reputed brand is introduced into the market, it generally shakes up the market share percentages, initially at least. So when Google released its much touted Google Chrome, it aroused my interest to see how much of a market share would it initially grab. The only place where I could test this was my blog and that’s what I did!

Before reading further, one thing to keep in mind is that most of the people who follow blogs are slightly more technologically endowed than the rest. Therefore, this data will definitely appear to be skewed in comparison to overall browser market share data.

I collected the my browser share data from pMetrics which is simply wonderful as far as blog metrics are concerned. You can check out our review here.

Here is a pie-chart for my visitor data on September 2. I’m going to call this Before Chrome.

As can be fairly expected, Firefox with over 85% is the preferred browser of most active web users. Internet Explorer came an expected second with a little over 12%.

Here’s data for September 3rd and I’m going to title this After Chrome.

This one surprised me and I’ll tell you why. It’s quite fair to understand that a lot of geeks are traditionally Firefox users so when a new browser hits the market, it is not unusual for quite a lot of Firefox users to try out the new product. What surprises me more is

  1. Chrome has overtaken Internet Explorer on Day 1
  2. Internet Explorer’s market share has surprisingly gone up by more than 2% instead of going down!

Does this mean that a few of the Firefox users have shifted(possibly temporarily) to Internet Explorer? Is it because a lot of Firefox users are also trying out the newly released Internet Explorer 8 Beta? I guess things will settle down a bit in the coming days.

Here’s a comparison between Before Chrome & After Chrome. This gives you a better idea as to how the shift has taken place.

I’ll do another analysis a week down and see how the stats are.

I decided to do a day by day analysis for a week or so to see how Google Chrome fares. Don’t forget to check out
